In the Remove and Fifths, the compulsory examined core of the curriculum includes English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Biology IGCSE (Edexcel, 4325), Chemistry IGCSE (Edexcel, 4335), Physics IGCSE (Edexcel, 4420) and Mathematics IGCSE (Edexcel, 4400) may all be taken at the end of the Fifth Form. English Language is also taken at the end of the Fifth Form; the top divisions will be entered for English Language IGCSE (CIE, 0500) and the bottom divisions for English Language GCSE (OCR, 1900). Pupils will not be entered for English Literature GCSE. Instead all Remove and Fifth Form pupils are required to follow Charterhouse’s own literature course, which concludes with a prize examination at the end of the Oration Quarter in the Fifth Form. Further details of this course are contained in a separate document enclosed with this booklet.
All boys in the Removes and Fifths are also required to complete an ICT course. The course follows an on-line teaching package and covers more advanced areas of Word Processing, Databases, Presentation and Spreadsheets.
Four additional subjects are chosen from the option subjects list below (at least one of which must be French, German or Spanish). GCSEs in the option subjects are taken at the end of the Fifth Form. The Remove option arrangement will be planned according to demand. It is usually possible to accommodate all requested subject combinations but occasionally we do need to revisit choices with a boy where it has simply not been possible to construct the timetable to provide his particular subject choices.
Art, Design & Technology, Classical Civilisation, Latin, Greek, Geography, History, French, German, Spanish, Religious Studies and Music.
Some information about the GCSE courses in the option subjects is given below. All boys are given full details of these. Further information is available from the Head of Department of the subject concerned or from the subject teacher. Boys will be asked to make their subject choices during the week following the presentation to parents.
