A visit to Charterhouse is an essential part of the process by which parents decide whether it is a suitable school for their children, and we encourage parents to visit at least once before they make their decision. For Year 9 entry, many parents choose to make a first visit without their son, although it is quite acceptable to bring him if they wish. For Sixth Form entrants, it is normal that the boy or girl is involved from the start.
Parents often visit before they register their son, but please remember that our Common Entrance List will usually close in December of Year 6. There are two kinds of visit, both of which provide a good introduction to the school.
Headmaster's Forums: these are for groups of parents (usually between 10 and 15) and take place regularly on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Parents (and boys if they wish), usually in pairs, are shown the Boarding Houses, Sports Centre and Theatre by a current pupil and the teaching areas (including Chapel, Library, Music School, Studio, DT Centre) by a member of staff. There is then a question and answer session for all with the Headmaster and Registrar.
Private Visits: these may be arranged at any time convenient to parents and the school. The tours (again usually in pairs) are the same as above (though the pupil will cover the whole tour in the afternoons), and will conclude with a meeting with the Registrar (or a senior member of staff if he is not available).
There are also Open Mornings in May and September each year for boys due to come to the school 2 years later (May and September 2009 for 2011 entrants). Boys who are registered will be invited with their parents, and will have the chance to see lessons taking place in all departments before meeting members of staff over lunch.
Taster Afternoons are arranged in June and September of the year before entry (2009 for 2010 entrants), which provide boys with a chance to sample some of the activities which the school offers, and conclude with a barbecue for the boys and their parents.
Girls and boys who wish to apply for Sixth Form entry are encouraged to visit the School with their parents during the year before the selection day in November.
Girls: there are two Open Afternoons for girls, in June and September of the year before entry, when girls and their parents are shown round the school by a girl pupil, and are then able to meet the Headmaster, Mrs Swift, the Head of Girls, and other teachers at tea. Girls who cannot come to an Open Afternoon may visit at a convenient time, and will be shown round by a girl pupil and then meet Mrs Swift.
Boys: boys may arrange a private visit with their parents at a time convenient to them and the school, and will be shown round by a Sixth Form boy and meet the Registrar.
