

Alex Peterken was Head Chorister at Chichester Cathedral, a Music Exhibitioner at Eton and a Choral Scholar at Durham University where he read Theology at Van Mildert College. He has taught Religious Studies at Charterhouse since 1997 and is a former Head of Higher Education and Careers. Alex has steered the U14 cricket team to victory in the Surrey Cup and has coached hockey and football at both senior and junior levels. He is married to Clare who was a Deputy Headmistress and they have three young children.

SPM. Allen MA, Mrs SC Allen MA
Simon Allen was a scholar and Head of School at Lancing College and read Modern Languages at Cambridge before joining Charterhouse to teach Spanish. He is Head of Spanish and was Master of the Specialists. Simon coaches A team football and cricket and holds the FA Level 3 coaching badge. His interests include ornithology, travel and singing.
Suzanne Allen read Natural Sciences at Cambridge and won a blue for athletics. She taught Biology at Wellington and Shrewsbury before coming to Charterhouse. She is officer in charge of the RAF section of the CCF, and master in charge of athletics. Her interests include outdoor activities and travel.

A Scholar at Eton and Oxford, Nigel Hadfield came to Charterhouse after a fifteen year management career with the Swire Group in Hong Kong, China, Australia and France. He teaches French, German and Chinese and includes languages, travel, music and sport among his main interests. Nigel was a judo Blue at Oxford and College Captain of boats, and now coaches football and hockey. He is married to Lucy who is an audiovisual and museum design consultant. They have three children.

Mark Blatchly was in Gownboys from 1973-1977 – a Music and English Scholar. He returned to Charterhouse as Director of Choral Music in 1996 after nineteen years as an organist, conductor and composer which began with organ scholarships at St Paul’s Cathedral and at Christ Church, Oxford. Mark is an eminent organist who has made a number of recordings and given recitals in almost every cathedral in England. He is married to Julia (née Leatham), a GP and also a former member of Gownboys.

Benjamin Thurston came to Charterhouse in 2003 as Head of Modern Languages. He was educated at Stamford School and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he was awarded a First in French and German. After two years working in the City he returned to Oxford to write a doctoral thesis. Benjamin has spent several years living in France and recently completed a post-doctoral research project at the Sorbonne. He is married to Catherine and they have a son, Raphael. His interests include rugby (half-blue), hillwalking, music and travel.

Simon Brennan comes from Northern Ireland and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. After teaching in Spain he came to Charterhouse in 1988. He is married to Mary-Rose and they have four sons. Simon was Head of Spanish and master in charge of athletics before becoming Housemaster of Lockites in 1996. He continues to teach football, helps a little with athletics and is a member of the Christian Union.

Andrew Johnston joined Charterhouse from Hampton School in 2005 to teach history. He is married to Juliet and they have two sons. Andrew was educated at Truro School and read Modern History at St Andrews where he gained an MA and a PhD. His interests include rugby and cricket, both of which he coaches at Charterhouse.

WEEKITES - P.R. Stapleton BSc

Phillip Stapleton came to Charterhouse in 2000 after four years teaching Chemistry at Stonyhurst. He is officer-in-charge of the army section of the CCF, master-incharge of squash, a keen musician and has led the Charterhouse expedition to Peru. Phillip and a friend have set themselves the challenge of running for charity four of the most extreme marathons in the world in a single year, The Extreme Feat. Phillip is married to Julie, a statistical consultant who works from home and who coaches girls’ sport at Charterhouse. They are expecting their first child in summer 2007.

David Wright has been Head of Brass at Charterhouse since he moved from Edinburgh in 1988 and is well known nationally for his work with young musicians. He is a Director of the Ben Travers Theatre at Charterhouse. While his interests are predominantly cultural he takes a strong interest in the Scottish Football League. He is married to Irene (the House Matron) and they have two grown up sons and two grandchildren.

Barry Larrigan came to Charterhouse in 1996 as Director of Information Technology from Lincoln Electric Europe, where he was European IT Manager. He is married to Sally who is out Systems Analyst/Programmer. He teaches Mathematics and Computing, is a keen fencer and football coach and runs the Sixth Form Club. He became Housemaster of Daviesites in 2006. Barry is a fine classical guitarist.

Ian Payne came to Charterhouse from Taunton School in 1996 to teach Mathematics. He is a graduate of King’s College, London and worked in the City before deciding to teach. Ian has headed the Higher Education and Careers Departments at Charterhouse and Taunton, and became Housemaster of Bodeites in 1999. He runs the cross-country and is Secretary of the Surrey Schools Athletics Association. Ian is married to Jill who was head of Home Economics at Taunton. They have two children.

James Hazeldine came to Charterhouse from Ashville College in Harrogate in 2000 to teach Economics and Business Studies. Whilst at Charterhouse he has been Head of Careers and ran the Challenge of Management Conference. He is now Head of Business Studies and coaches football and hockey. His interests include sport and current affairs. He is married to Sarah, and has a son and a daughter.

Chris Ellis has taught Biology at Charterhouse since he arrived in 1978, after studying at the universities of Bristol and Liverpool. He was Director of Studies for fifteen years and previously Head of Department. Chris has been master in charge of crosscountry and has been involved in athletics, mountaineering, hill-walking and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. He is married to Celia who teaches at Prior’s Field and they have two daughters.

Will Lane was a pupil at Malvern College before going up to St Andrew’s University to read History. After a year as an Exchange Scholar at Emory University in Atlanta and a PGCE at Queens' College, Cambridge, he joined the History department at Charterhouse in 1993 and is currently Head of Department. Will has directed a number of productions in the Ben Travers Theatre and is a keen musician. He has also coached teams in all the major sports.

Stephen Hearn has taught Physics at Charterhouse since 1985, after completing an MSc at the University of London and working in the semiconductor industry. He was Head of Science for twelve years and is heavily involved in science teacher training and physics curriculum development. He has also established close links with the Hill School in the USA, where he taught for a year on exchange. Stephen has coached football and is master in charge of basketball. He is married to Hazel, who works at the Wharf Nursery in Godalming, and they have two sons.
