Master Plan

The School’s Master Plan addresses the needs of Charterhouse for the next century and beyond.  From refurbishment of existing buildings to re-routing traffic through the grounds, the vision of the Master Plan embraces several changes that will make the School a better place to learn, live, and play.

School Entrance

First impressions are important.  Guests of the School currently must wind their way through the grounds - dodging students and parked cars - with no logical or apparent focal point as a destination.  The Master Plan calls for visitors to follow the existing tree-lined entry but then curve left in front of the Headmaster’s residence.

Visitors' Centre

This intelligent re-routing will terminate at a new Visitor’s Centre, housed in a beautiful 19th century building constructed from Bargate stone (quarried on campus in the 1800’s) near the centre of the grounds that currently houses the Maintenance Department. The charm of this original structure will be restored to make a home for the Admissions Office and reception area.

Pedestrianisation

One of the main benefits of re-routing the entry is creating a safer and more aesthetically appealing centre of the School.  All cars currently using this area will use a new car park situated close by.  Additional plots of grass and flower beds will take root where asphalt once ruled.

Squash Courts and New Astroturf Pitches

Before this stunning building, currently occupied by Maintenance, can be refurbished and Admissions and reception move in, Maintenance needs a new home.  It has been determined that the best location is that of the current squash courts.

Consequently, the Master Plan calls for building new squash courts attached to the Queens Sports Centre.  In addition, 2 new astroturf pitches will replace the aging astro pitch outside the Queen’s Sport Centre.  This brings upgraded squash courts closer to the hub of sports at the School, with access to shower and changing facilities.  The new astros will more than double the current space for hockey and tennis. Six new hard surface tennis courts will also be built on the site.

Fletcherites - The New Day House

Great Comp, present home of the Health Centre, will be completely renovated to provide space for 50 day pupils beginning in September of 2010.  Frank Fletcher, one of Charterhouse’s most notable Headmasters, originally purchased the house and surrounding land for the School.  It served as the Headmaster’s residence for many years and has the perfect location, size and provenance to undertake this important, new role.  Residents will be aptly titled Fletcherites.
