Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we asked to give money?

Tuition and fees alone do not cover the true costs of a Charterhouse education.  Your gift can benefit the pupils directly through providing more bursaries to deserving pupils, enhancing existing programs, helping to improve the facilities, and assuring that Charterhouse remains a world-class educational institution.

How do I give?

Gifts can be made via credit card, bank transfer, or personal cheque.  Please see contact information below.

How much should I give?

How much to give is completely up to you. Over time, the Charterhouse Annual Fund appeals and other campaigns will provide an increasingly reliable annual boost to the School’s finances and its ability to fund bursaries and other important initiatives. Your gift makes a difference.

Can I choose how the School uses my gift?

Yes. You may make an unrestricted gift  which allows Charterhouse to apply your gift where it is most needed, or you may stipulate specifically how you would like your gift to be used.

Does Charterhouse only accept gifts of money?

Gifts of company stock, classroom/athletic equipment, and other gifts appropriate to the needs of the School are sincerely appreciated. One OC even gave Charterhouse a nearly-new large screen television for a House lounge. Please contact the Development Office for more information.

Can I leave Charterhouse a gift through my will or estate?

Remembering Charterhouse in your will is one of the finest ways to assure that the School continues to flourish in the years ahead. Membership in the Thomas Sutton Society simply means you have informed the School of your intention to support even after you are gone. Consult your solicitor or tax advisor about adding a simple codicil to your will that names Charterhouse as a beneficiary. Future generations of Old Carthusians will appreciate your foresight.

What about Gift Aid?

Gift Aid can multiply the amount of your gift. Please contact the Development Office for assistance.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

H M Revenue and Customs provides information on, 'Tax efficient giving to charity: the basics'  which can be accessed using the link below:

For further information pertaining to your particular circumstances, please contact your tax advisor.

What is a matching gift program? Do all companies have one?

A matching gift program allows one to have their gift to Charterhouse matched by the company for which they work. It can increase the amount of your donation 50-100%!  Not all companies have a matching gift programme. If the company you work for offers a matching gift programme, obtain a gift-match form from your human resources department and send it to Charterhouse, along with your gift or referencing a gift you have already made to which to apply the match.

What is an Alumni Annual Fund?

An Alumni Annual Fund is comprised of gifts given annually by former students of the School.  Typically one gives to the Annual Fund on a consistent basis as part of an overall personal philanthropic plan.
