The Governing Body has great pleasure in announcing that Dr Alex Peterken has been appointed Headmaster of Charterhouse. He will take up the post in January 2018.
Since 2010, Alex has been Headmaster of Cheltenham College, the 650-strong co-educational boarding school, having been promoted into that role from his previous position as Deputy Headmaster. He will be known to many in the Charterhouse community: he taught at the School for eleven years, was Head of Higher Education and Careers for two years, and an extremely successful Housemaster of Saunderites for six years until he left in 2008.
Alex was the unanimous choice of the Governing Body. He has a passion for excellence in education, a proven ability in strategic leadership, and combines energy and flair with a very approachable and down-to-earth manner. As a former senior member of the teaching staff at Charterhouse, he has the great advantage of familiarity with the ethos and culture of the School, but he also brings significant leadership experience and a fresh perspective from his nine years at Cheltenham College, seven of those as Headmaster. During that time, he has driven a programme of significant strategic change in all aspects of the college with great success, including the opening of three new boarding houses and improving pastoral support systems at the same time as delivering record examination results.
Most importantly, in all the discussions with Alex, there has been a clear meeting of minds about the very exciting opportunities that exist for Charterhouse, and about the way ahead.
Educated at Eton, Alex read Theology at the University of Durham and was a Choral Scholar at Durham Cathedral. He completed an MA in Education Management at the University of London in 2002 and a professional doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Surrey in 2008.
His interests are wide-ranging: he sings in a number of choirs and plays the piano; he is also a keen sportsman, having coached cricket, football and hockey for many years and run several half marathons.
Alex is married to Henrietta and they and their children are very much looking forward to joining the Charterhouse community.
Alex writes: "I am thrilled to be returning to Charterhouse and immensely proud to have been appointed as Headmaster of this great school. It is an institution for which I feel deep affection, but my wish to return is not just a decision of the heart: the School has an illustrious history but my greater interest is in its exciting future. It is clear that the Governing Body have ambitious plans for Charterhouse. I am very much looking forward to working closely with them, colleagues in Brooke Hall, all staff, and the wider School community to ensure that it goes to greater heights and that future generations continue to benefit from the excellence of its education."
