The major games are football, hockey and cricket, but there is a wide variety of other sports: swimming and athletics, golf and sailing, rugby and shooting, racquets, tennis, squash and fives to name but a few.
There are School as well as House matches in most sports. Teachers help with running teams, and the cricket and racquets professionals are both members of Brooke Hall. The girls also have regular fixtures against other schools in hockey, lacrosse, netball, tennis and cricket.
Music has a long and fine tradition at Charterhouse, and Ralph Vaughan Williams was a pupil in the early days in Godalming. About half the pupils have music lessons, and many participate in other musical activities, like the House Music Festival or the Oratorio Choir. Pupils regularly perform in ten minute recitals during quarter (the morning break), and there is a host of choirs and ensembles: Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir, Symphony Orchestra, String Orchestra, Jazz Band and Brass Band.
The Ben Travers Theatre is the centre of a thriving Theatre Studies department, and also hosts a variety of performances from Shakespeare to Lack of Talent, an annual sixth-form variety show which raises large sums for charity. The best productions are of a near professional standard.
Art and Design Technology are both popular, and pupils’ work displays a remarkably high level of skill and creative imagination.
Carthusians can participate in the Model United Nations at the Hague, undertake expeditions to remote places like Mongolia and Madagascar, master the workings of the internal combustion engine, and develop a love of rock-climbing, opera or sub-aquatic exploration.
The variety of challenging activities provided is an essential part of the School’s inclusive educational philosophy.
A programme of weekend activities is offered on Saturday afternoons and Sundays.
A full line-up of sports fixtures is offered on Saturday afternoons, with some of the younger age groups putting out as many as 5 or 6 teams. On a number of selected weekends there is also a programme for younger boys who are not in these teams which runs until 4.00 pm. This features activities such as a year-group swimming gala.
Each Sunday sees a visit organised for which pupils can sign up.
There are also certain weekends when there are particular cultural activities organised such as music prizes, and house drama and music festivals.
Two weekends - one in early Autumn and another in late Spring - are designated as "Activity Weekends". These provide an opportunity for many pupils to further pursue their Monday Activity with a one- or two-day expedition.
Charterhouse boasts an extraordinary array of Clubs and Societies. Some are open to any pupil whilst others are selective or by invitation only. Some meet weekly whilst others meet fortnightly or at other intervals during a Quarter.
