Headmaster's Letters & Awards

Awards & Distinctions

Throughout the Quarter, the Headmaster awards prizes to pupils who have been given a Distinction by a teacher for an outstanding piece of work.

The Greyhound Awards and other special named prizes are awarded to pupils at the end of each Quarter for their contribution and achievements.

Distinctions can be awarded for a single piece of work that is of a standard that could be published on the website and something that goes beyond the standard that would be anticipated by a pupil of that age.

Distinctions awarded in LQ18

Teacher's comments

Michael Freeman A fantastic piece of personal investigation: Michael chose to research the way Horace uses Callimachus as an influence, and his use of 'recusatio'. The essay was well-researched, evidenced and referenced, clearly written and convincingly argued. A great end to an excellent first term's work.
Alexandra-Clara Popescu  Three excellent pieces of writing in Spanish during OQ (a letter, an essay and a creative narration).
Lia Rockey A fascinating personal investigation on Tibullus, one of the lesser-spotted of the Latin love poets! Lia addressed the question of Tibullus' 'Hellenism' with a view to understanding his place within the neoterics and Latin love elegy, and why, nowadays, we hear comparably little of him. She read remarkably widely and expressed herself not only with typical panache but also a degree of control and clarity that made her topic accessible even to a comparable layman such as myself! Well done Lia.
Veronika Voevodina A simply excellent personal investigation - Veronika chose the topic 'How sad are Ovid's Tristia?' and produced a very engaging and well-evidenced discussion. She read widely both in the original and through secondary scholarship, and expressed herself clearly and concisely. Well done Veronika!
Christopher Lim
When set a 'poster' on Winston Churchill, Chris presented me with a 13 page project. It was superb. Eloquently written, beautifully presented and peppered with fascinating information, I felt I learned a lot. Moreover, Chris' bibliography at the end demonstrated a range of primary sources, the reliability of which was well evaluated. Very much the best piece of work I have received from an Under School pupil during my career.
