There are extensive information technology facilities at Charterhouse, managed and maintained by a dedicated IT Services department.
All School computers are connected to the School network, enabling access to network resources and the Internet from all main buildings and Houses.
Most hashrooms are equipped with networked PCs and data projectors. A number are also equipped with interactive whiteboards.
Pupils benefit from three main computing suites, each equipped with high specification PCs loaded with Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Office 2003 as standard. All computing suites can be used for lessons and are open at other times for pupil use. The suites are equipped with data projectors and interactive whiteboards. There is also a dedicated Art Studio computer room with Apple iMac computers used for digital photography, video and animation work. There are further PCs available for pupil use in the Library.
Each House has its own computer suite for pupil use. There is wireless network provision in all Houses and many other areas of the School including the Library, providing wireless laptop users full access to the School network and online resources.
Pupils are allocated an email account for communication within the School; access to Internet email services is permitted for personal communications. School email can be accessed remotely from any PC connected to the Internet. From OQ 2006 pupils will be able to remotely access the School Intranet and their network folder.
There is fast access to the Internet with all content being filtered by our Internet Service Provider to block material found to be inappropriate for use in the education environment.
The majority of pupils have their own laptops and the School has recently introduced a Laptop Scheme that can be used to purchase a laptop to ensure full compatibility with our networks and software packages. The scheme is not compulsory however and we will connect any compatible laptop to our wireless network, although we are unable to offer other support services for these. Printing facilities are provided, but we find that pupils benefit from personal printers which are quite inexpensive to purchase. USB storage devices are highly recommended for saving work files and transporting them between computers.
There is a School Acceptable Use Policy to ensure pupils understand what acceptable use of information technology is and isn't.
