Charterhouse has always had a thriving dramatic tradition. There are numerous opportunities for pupils to participate in the theatrical life of the school: either on stage, as part of the technical crew, front of house, directing or designing. During the academic year, there are in the region of seven or eight full scale major productions. Some are specific to year groups, others involve all years. Examples of productions from last year include, “Find Me”, “Our Country’s Good”, “The Trial”, “An Alien Stole My Skateboard”, “Alarms and Excursions”, “An Actor’s Nightmare” and “Oliver Twist”.
In addition to the above, there is the practical exam work of the A-Level groups, house plays and pupil-directed productions.
Next year the Lower School will be performing “Julius Caesar” at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford, as part of the School’s Shakespeare Festival, a short festival of pupil-directed productions and there is also a tour to the United States planned. November will see the production of a major musical, which will involve pupils from every year in the school.
The Drama Department also offer L.A.M.D.A. Speech and Drama lessons as well as the opportunity to attain certificates from other awarding bodies.
It is an exciting time for Drama at Charterhouse at the moment, with new developments being discussed and the great tradition that the school already enjoys being taken to even greater heights.
