First Year Specialists are first briefed in LQ with a lecture introducing Higher Education options and small group induction sessions in the HE & Careers Library. They are introduced to the University and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS) and how to research courses and institutions. Pupils are encouraged to access the HE & Careers pages on the School intranet, which has links to useful websites and advertises courses and workshops.

The UCAS website has targeted information for students and parents as well as a comprehensive course search facility with most university courses showing a detailed course profile including requirements for that degree programme.
In the last week of CQ, all First Year Specialists participate in a two-day University Preparation Programme, attending the following series of lectures and workshops:
- Making choices and Researching Courses
- Personal Statements
- Interview Training
- Careers, Work Experience and Gap Years
- UCAS 'Apply' online system
- Gap Year Fair (Inspiring Futures)
- Financial Awareness workshops
This programme gives pupils the opportunity to begin completing their UCAS application form and drafting their Personal Statement. Handouts with more information about this are available below and also in the Library:
Once a UCAS application has been made, universities will make offers to successful applicants, requiring that they achieve certain grades in their final examinations. Second Year Specialists will need to choose a first choice institution and an insurance option, as well as being clear on action that may need to be taken on Results Day in August.
Detailed advice on this is available from the HE & Careers Department, with some details outlined in the document below:
