The Department believes it is crucial for pupils to begin developing skills and experience to prepare them for the workplace, and practical work experience forms an important part of this process. We encourage all pupils to undertake at least one work experience placement during their time at Charterhouse. For the majority, this would take place following the GCSE exam period in the summer term of the Fifth Form (Year 11) or during the summer holidays.
We encourage pupils and their parents to arrange and negotiate their own one week placement closer to their home, preferably to take place in the last week of June. Surrey Heath Area Partnership for Education (SHAPE) provides the Health and Safety checks which are required by law for all UK based placements and these checks are facilitated by the school. Fifth Form pupils are introduced to this programme in OQ and the following letter to parents explains the work experience process in more detail:
The following forms are required to be filled in and returned to the school for each pupil who will be undertaking work experience. This is of particular importance to ensure that the Health and Safety checks are completed in good time.
The Higher Education and Careers Intranet site holds information for additional work experience opportunities and career taster workshops. In the last week of CQ, the department hosts a Futurewise Gap Year and Careers Fair, and a variety of careers talks throughout the year may also highlight opportunities for work experience.
