YK Pao School, Shanghai

On 21 October 2013 a memorandum of understanding was signed by representatives of Charterhouse and YK Pao School. The signing ceremony took place at the Shanghai school’s recently-opened Songjiang campus which provides a secondary boarding education to complement its now well-established primary school.

The partnership between Charterhouse and YK Pao School aims to explore what opportunities exist for learning from each other, including through teacher and pupil exchanges. Indeed, several YK Pao teachers have already spent time at Charterhouse in recent years.

At the signing ceremony YK Pao School’s co-founder, Philip Sohmen, was delighted to welcome the delegation from Charterhouse, particularly John and Sarah Witheridge whom he remembered fondly from his time as a boy at Eton College. Headmaster Wu Zijian and Executive Principal Tony Jaccaci gave warm and enthusiastic speeches looking ahead to future collaboration and opportunities for pupils and teachers that the new relationship will bring to both schools.

In his speech John Witheridge noted the schools’ similar philosophies, with a shared focus on academic achievement while at the same time emphasizing the importance of independent enquiry and developing pupils’ potential in other areas. The boarding model of both schools enables pupils to take part in a wide range of activities and events, fostering the development of different skills and educating the whole person.

Second Master, Andrew Turner told the audience of parents and teacher representatives that Charterhouse is a school with a tremendous history but is also an innovator in introducing curricula such as the IB Diploma Programme and the Cambridge Pre-U.  He expressed his excitement at the opportunity to connect with and learn from China’s education system with its thousands of years of history.  Deputy Headmaster (Academic) James Kazi spoke of how the IB Diploma encourages pupils to learn both broadly and deeply as well as stimulating learning outside the classroom.
