International Baccalaureate (IB)

Charterhouse has decided to seek authorisation to offer the IB Diploma Programme with the intention to begin teaching in September 2011 followed by the first examinations in summer 2013. In order to do this, we must successfully pass through a process of authorisation by the International Baccalaureate.

From 2011, assuming our application to offer the Diploma Programme is successful, Charterhouse’s unique Sixth Form curriculum will offer pupils the choice between the traditional specialisation of largely Cambridge Pre-U courses and the more broad-based Diploma Programme.

Only schools authorised by the IB, entitled IB World Schools, can offer any of its three programmes (of which the IB Diploma Programme is one) and these programmes share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Charterhouse believes is important for its pupils.

The process of IB authorisation requires extensive preparation and teacher professional development which culminates in an authorisation visit by a team from the IB organisation before final IB approval is considered. Beginning the application process gives no guarantee that authorisation will be granted.
