Admissions Introduction

13-18 year old boys boarding. 16-18 year old girls and boys boarding.

Boys are admitted to Charterhouse in Year 9, when most of them are 13. We do not have any hard and fast rules about the age of admission, and some boys come when they are still 12 and others when they are 14. The most important thing is that they are ready to start boarding in an academically demanding environment.

Most boys are admitted after taking the Foundation Scholarship or Common Entrance Examinations. We do, however, have our own tests for boys who are not at Prep Schools. A limited number of boys from overseas are admitted after taking our own tests in English, Mathematics and Science, usually in the January of the year of entry.

A limited number of boys who live within very easy reach of Charterhouse can be admitted as day boarders, at the discretion of the Headmaster. Each becomes a member of one of the boarding Houses and participates fully in the life of the School. They are expected to attend Chapel and remain at School in the evening until their Housemaster gives them permission to go home (not before 9.00pm).

At Sixth Form, around 75 girls and 30 boys join each year as boarders or day boarders, and become members of the sixth form House or one of the eleven boarding Houses. Admission is by competitive examination and interview.
