Pontifeat 2008

121 runners enjoyed good humour and a sunny break in the weather for the second Charity fun-run ‘Pontifeat’ on Sunday 9th March. Runners, walkers, and dogs could select 1 lap, approx 3.5Km or 2 laps [7.0Km] with the final hill, ‘Deaths Drop’, coming just before the decision point.

The challenging itinerary follows the school’s cross-country Pontifex course, missing out the dangerously rutted Happy Valley and subsequent climb, and provides a popular and beautiful route around the Charterhouse campus. There is plenty to satiate runners of all abilities: steep hills, woodland tracks, friendly atmosphere, glorious scenery, impressive goodie bag but it is not a long run!  This year got off to a flying start with a sprint round the school playing fields; last year’s course records were broken for both distances with Felix Hamer completing the half in 14.45 and Lee Kemp winning the full distance for the second successive year in 26.23.

A cheerful and relaxed atmosphere was the glossy veneer to many hours of pre-race preparation that helped to make the day another great success – thank you to all those who spent hours planning the event: for their inspiration and enthusiasm.  Pontifeat was part of the Extreme Feat challenge which aims to raise £150000 for CHASE and culminates in the Sahara desert this Easter with the Marathon des Sables.

The steep entry fee of £15, which furnished them with a commemorative T-shirt, medal and goodie bag, combined with event sponsorship from ‘Clarke Gammon Wellers’ and various kind donations and sponsorship has helped Pontifeat raise over £10,000 for CHASE.
