Education in the Community
Charterhouse has been trying to support teaching and learning in curriculum areas where there are currently severe needs. The project has been focussing on physics initially but there are plans to expand the range of subjects supported over the next few years.
Members of the science department have been involved with various ‘education in the community’ projects for the last five years. This work has ranged from some large scale education projects with partner schools, to one-off SATS preparation classes with local primary schools. A free Easter revision course for GCSE pupils and a summer school for AS physics students were also offered last year.
A large part of the work has been carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Physics and the Science enhancement project, in the important area of physics teacher training. This has involved developing and delivering workshops for students at local teacher training universities. The school is currently hosting a three-month booster course at weekends to help 24 non-specialist physical science teachers prepare for physics teaching in the state sector.
This is important national work which has a positive influence on our day to day work with pupils at Charterhouse.
