Charterhouse School Governing Body, Science enhancement programme (SEP), Institute of Physics (IoP) and Surrey University worked in partnership to produce a totally free one week residential course designed to boost Physics subject knowledge. The course ran from 9th to 13th July 2007 at Charterhouse school in Surrey. Delegate feedback has been excellent.

The schools excellent laboratory facilities were put to good use delivering an intensive course that attracted 27 delegates from 5 teacher training institutions and the majority of the participants are taking up teacher training this autumn. A few more experienced teachers also attended.

Experienced Physics teachers, University lecturers and guest presenters delivered talks and supervised lab work covering the basics of key stage 3 and 4 physics. SEP equipment and published material were used as well as the IoP's key stage 3 support CD's and members of the IoP teacher network. The delegates had an opportunity to meet recently qualified teachers during the evening sessions. The last day was given up to project work culminating in small teams presenting to the whole group.

The present course will run again next year and an additional week dedicated to addressing the needs of the NQT, or the more experienced teacher who wants to develop their physics teaching, will be offered.

The present partnership will be extended to offer more on going support as the teacher training students enter their first year in post.
