Charterhouse will be 400 years old in 2011. Ours is a long and eminent history and we are already planning our celebrations. We will want to look back, of course, with proper pride and thankfulness, but we will also want to look forward to Charterhouse’s role and purpose in the next four centuries.
I think that balance like this is typical of Charterhouse, and one of our distinguishing characteristics. We ensure, for example, that by the time they leave us, our boys and girls are so highly qualified that they pass into the best universities, in Britain and abroad – but our priority is not examination grades but the stimulation of independent enquiry and intellectual curiosity. We try too to balance academic work with a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities and here we maintain another balance between sport and culture. And we are a School with a strong Christian tradition which still expresses itself in regular worship in chapel but also today in service to others and open discussion.
You will discover a very comprehensive picture of Charterhouse in our website. I hope you enjoy it and will want to visit us. We look forward to meeting you.
