Challenge of Management
The Charterhouse Challenge of Management is an annual event which involves the First Year Specialists. It runs over two days starting on the Monday evening of the last week of Quarter and finishing in the afternoon of the Tuesday. They are required to carry out a task which enables them to demonstrate important the skills of team working, communication, decision making, presenting, and time management. The pupils work in small groups within their houses and are responsible for managing the task themselves.
This year’s challenge required the pupils to bid for the right to run the UK’s first ‘Super Casino’. They had to consider the benefits for regional development as well as show how their casino would deal with the issue of problem gambling. The challenge began with a fascinating insight into the industry provided by experts representing the casinos themselves, local council, gambling charities and government advisors.
The quality of the presentations this year was particularly high with pupils showing a great deal of understanding for the complex issues they faced. The winning team came from Pageites who had put together a bid for running the casino in Newcastle.
