Challenge of Management 2007

The Charterhouse Challenge of Management is an annual event which involves the First Year Specialists. It runs over two days starting on the Monday evening of the last week of Quarter and finishing in the afternoon of the Tuesday. They are required to carry out a task which enables them to demonstrate the important skills of team-working, communication, decision making, presenting, and time management. The pupils work in small groups within their houses and are responsible for managing the task themselves.

This year’s Challenge involved the pupils producing a 5-minute news-style video on the proposals to dig a quarry at Eashing Farm. The quarry lies only a mile from the main school site and will have a considerable impact on the school and Godalming. We had the help of British Telecom with expert advice from Dialogics, a media production consultancy. They ran two workshops on Monday evening on film editing and camera work.

The quality of the final videos was exceptionally high. Some had included interviews with local residents whilst others used caricatures and humour to put across their important message. The eventual winners were Pageites. They have now won this event three times in the last four years.
