Charity News OQ 2006

The new Head of Charities this year is Lucy Robbie (W), and each House has its own representative on this committee. It is hoped that each House will adopt its own charity, and over the course of the year various House events will fundraise for these eleven different charities.

There have been two school charity events this Quarter; a charity lunch and Mufti Day.

Avenance provided a delicious soup and roll selection for the lunch, a saving of £728 from the usual budget, which was an increase from last year, since the suppliers provided the vegetables free of charge. Yet again this event was a success; the alternative meal is enjoyed by all members of the school, and the money raised will be sent to Food Aid.

Mufti Day remains the easiest way to fund-raise at school. However, this Quarter the pupils were expected to pay £2.50 from their own pocket money for the privilege of wearing their own clothes for the day; a massive £1,963 was raised by the pupils and member of Brooke Hall. Next term, I hope that we will exceed £2,000. This money has been split between a cancer support group set up by Sara Orpen, the bursar’s secretary, and LEPRA, a charity helping to cure leprosy worldwide.

An on-going project has also been set up by Sally Larrigan at school. All used printer cartridges and old mobile phones are being recycled to raise money for Chase, a local hospice for terminally ill children. Over the first 6 months, over £230 has been raised. If any pupils, staff, parents or friends would like to contribute to this project, please contact sjl@charterhouse.org.uk to organise collection of your used items.

If anyone would like to find out more about how they can support charities at Charterhouse, they should contact me at scb@charterhouse.org.uk.
