JPF addressed the Society on “Dido’s Literary Antecedents”, showing how Virgil drew on many different sources to create the complex character of Dido, queen of Carthage. Those sources were principally Homer’s Odyssey and Greek tragic figures such as Medea and Ajax, but also included the philosophy of Lucretius and figures from history such as Cleopatra.
