A young squad has just returned from a third successful tour of Malaysia. The show began in Kuala Lumpur with a fascinating tour of the Bukit Jalil Sports School. In the evening they gave a great display of controlled skilful hockey. We then moved on to Ipoh where we were privileged to play in the Sultan Azlam Shah stadium. Our first opponents were Anderson School. They are another talented side who brought along their own School Brass band to serenade the teams before the match. As a state side Perak are proud of their tradition in producing hockey internationals and their current U-18 side show much promise for the future.

Our tour then moved across the water to Penang. Though we enjoyed the relaxation of a resort in the north of the island the serious business took place at the USM stadium at the University. Again the junior state side proved too strong for our young players. However lessons had been learnt and we managed to win a close fought match with Penang Free School. At this stage the squad were ready for a break on Langkawi despite a rough ferry crossing.

The tour recommenced with a visit to Melaka. We were welcomed to the School in the morning with a traditional display of music and other entertainment. In the match they took their chances well and we created too few openings. On the journey back to KL we stopped at Seremban to play Tunku Besar Tampin. They turned up in force with their musicians & dancers to welcome us. In a great atmosphere we managed to come back from 0-1 to win a thrilling encounter.

Our return to KL gave us another victory with an exciting win over Kepong Baru. Our final opponents were St Johns who welcomed us to their School in the morning with a guard of honour and the School band, all resplendent. We enjoyed and participated in another show of music and dance and had a chance to meet some of their blind students. In the final match we experienced another top class side and though they took the lead twice we persevered and managed a late equaliser to share the honours.

We are most grateful to all our opponents who hosted us in such a spectacular and memorable manner. We thoroughly enjoyed the Malaysian hospitality and we are grateful to the efforts of OCs and their families as well as the Minister of Education who hosted a tea party and ensured that all should run so smoothly.
