'Help for Haiti' Benefit Concert

Under School Benefit Concert, Wednesday 10th, Thursday 11th March, Concert Hall

Last week saw boys from the Under School putting on a Benefit Concert in aid of Haiti. Fifths, Removes and Fourths together performed eleven songs in Concert Hall that showcased an exceptional array of talent and promise: the professionalism of musicianship and singing was a delight to see. Organised by Ben Foulston (R) in the Removes and Ben Stafford (R) in the Fifths the concerts raised over £100 in voluntary charitable donations (i.e. money from the boys’ own pockets), provided an outlet for the school’s budding rock musicians, and gave two nights of great entertainment for the rest of us.

To go into details of each performance would be long-winded, but it is certainly worth pointing out that not only was there some great specialist rock-hero guitar-playing (Ben Foulston standing out) but plenty of multi-instrumentalists who would, for example, play drums for one song, switch to bass for another, then double up on keyboards before singing their own track (Joshua Pacey in particular, step forward). Singers Barney Wynter, Jonny Peppiatt, Rob McGowan Stuart and Ollie Higginson stood out for some very fine singing, while Ollie’s Duckite band (including Tom MacFarlane on drums and Steve Kontoyannis on guitar and bass) performed their own material which – despite the unfortunate influence of Coldplay – was extraordinarily good.

The whole show could not have happened without Mr Richardson who spent many hours setting things up, overseeing rehearsals, sound engineering and providing groovy lasers. All involved are most grateful.

The future for school bands certainly looks very bright indeed at the moment.
