Charterhouse Art Director, Peter Monkman, is the winner of the prestigious BP Portrait Award 2009 with a picture of his 12-year-old daughter, Anna, entitled Changeling 2.
Changeling 2 is part of a series of paintings of Anna exploring the concept of the changeling. "I challenge the fixed notion of an idealised image of childhood and substitute it for a more unsettling, complex representation that exists in its own right as a painting," Peter says.

The Headmaster, the Revd John Witheridge comments, ‘I am delighted that Peter Monkman has won the prestigious BP Portrait Award, and out of nearly 2,000 entrants. This is a remarkable achievement, and our pupils are very fortunate to be taught and inspired by him. Peter heads an Art Department at Charterhouse where the standard of work is extraordinarily high.’
Changeling 2 will be exhibited in a show at the National Portrait Gallery alongside another 56 works chosen from 1,901 submissions from around the world. The exhibition will run from 18 June to 14 September before going on tour to Southampton and Edinburgh.
