The Biology Department have dontated student textbooks to the charity READ International, a network of regional student-volunteer-led projects collecting disused books from schools across the UK. They sort them, match them to the Tanzanian/Ugandan syllabus and send them to East Africa. Any book not relevant to send is sold online to generate funding. If it cannot be sent or sold it is recycled, generating more funding.
READ International, awarded Best New Charity of the Year 2007, focus mainly on Maths, English, Geography and Science books for years 7-11. They also redistribute A-level books, and other items such as stationery, science equipment, calculators and sports equipment.
