Government and Politics Trip to Washington

The Government and Politics Department has just returned from its incredibly successful trip to Washington DC, exploring the American political process from a first hand perspective.

The Department had a behind the scenes tour at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, met with the Head of Grassroots at the National Rifle Association, toured the Capitol with the assistance and expertise of Congressman Sensenbrenner’s office and later met the current and former chiefs of staff to the House Judiciary Committee in a private meeting.

On the last day in the city, the Department sat in a session of the US Supreme Court after which they met the Secretary of Justice David Souter for a special tour of the Supreme Court and its offices.

The trip wasn’t all business however as the pupils were able to tour some of America’s greatest museums on the Mall of the Smithsonian, sample the cuisine of a 1950s-style diner and to enjoy a special barbecue hosted in their honour by Mr Knight’s family in Northern Virginia. This was a trip that will certainly be remembered by the pupils in the years to come.
