Following the recent disappointing narrow defeat in the final of the Halford Hewitt it is now undoubtedly the case that Old Carthusian golf is returning to pre-eminence in Old Boys golf!
“The greatest of all truly amateur tournaments” says Nick Tremayne, golf writer. This year it certainly was. The OC Golf Society put an excellent team into the Halford Hewitt Golf Tournament this year at Royal St George’s Sandwich and Deal. It comprised five pairs: Mark Benka (W 91), Tim Orgill (G 88), Simon Stillwell (G 95), Richard Caldwell (G 95), Julian Hill (W 78), Andy Hollingsworth (L 98), Bob Manning (D 89), Ryan McKinnia (L 07), Barnaby Mote (V 91), Christian Ayres (G 91) and Alex Stanley (S 99).
They achieved their best result for many years reaching the final on Sunday, 11th April after six rounds of golf over four days. Captained by Peter Goodliffe (R 76), the teams swept through round after round easily beating their opponents – fired on by the historic moment on the first day when Mark Benka played a hole in one.
The week after he played in the Halford Hewitt, Julian Hill (W79) and his son Archie (W) played in the Fathers & Sons tournament at West Hill (a national competition with 128 entries). They battled through to Friday (7 rounds) winning the semi-final in the morning, and only losing the final in the afternoon. Both of the last two matches went to the 19th hole.
