The Monday Activities programme provides each pupil with up to three courses over a four year period with self-reliance, leadership training and basic outward bound activities at the heart of the programme.
The programme runs each Monday afternoon: 4.15 - 6.00 pm (summer timetable); 2.15 - 4.00 pm (winter timetable) and involves all pupils in the Under School and First Year Specialists. The programme is optional for Second Year Specialists.
One weekend in the Oration Quarter (Autumn) and one weekend in the Long Quarter (Spring) are designated as an Activities Weekend, starting on a Saturday afternoon and finishing on a Monday evening. This allows up to two days for those Activities requiring time for outward bound expeditions.

Fourths begin with a two-term programme of orientation to Charterhouse and its environment as well as a PHSE programme.
First Year Specialists choose one of the following for OQ and LQ: continue with Duke of Edinburgh or CCF for both Quarters; one course for each Quarter from a list of Cultural, Business and [Community] Service (CBS) courses (see below). The 50 mile walk takes place in the last week of CQ, with all first year specialists either walking or helping.
Second Year Specialists choose one of the following for OQ and LQ: continue with CCF or DoE; involvement in house adopted charity; help to deliv er und er school programmes; private study (in library or study).
Pioneers:
The Pioneer programme for Fourths and Removes aims to develop self-reliance, leadership and teamwork skills through participation in a range of outdoor-orientated activities. The programme includes activities such as orienteering, team-building tasks, first aid, indoor climbing, and cooking. Activities Weekends for Removes in OQ and LQ will require teams of Pioneers to plan and walk a route, usually along the South Downs. The grand finale for the Remove year is the 3-Day Expedition at the end of CQ, which involves navigating in teams across the wilds of West Sussex, camping out for two nights and completing teamwork challenges along the way.
In the fifth form, Pioneers extend their outdoor skills through learning woodland skills such as coppicing and drystone walling and begin to serve the Charterhouse community through recycling and learning about the work of the school’s support staff.
CCF:
Through a structured programme of both military and adventurous training, cadets develop powers of leadership to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance. Cadets join one of four sections: Royal Navy, Royal Marines (by selection), Army or Royal Air Force, and are trained in such military skills as weapon handling, drill and navigation, and enjoy such adventurous training as canoeing, hill walking, sailing and climbing. All cadets are strongly encouraged to attend camps and courses run by the regular forces. Cadets may also work towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (see below); indeed, service as an NCO will count towards the Volunteering section of the Award.
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE):
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development for young people. The Award is valued by parents, university admissions tutors, employers and others as it demonstrates that the holder possesses valuable qualities. The Award comprises four sections: Volunteering, where participants undertake some form of community service; Physical, where they take part in some physical activity such as sport; Skill, where they develop some non-physical interest; and Expedition where they plan and carry out an expedition (usually on foot), in open or wild country, which involves camping out overnight. For further information see the website www.dofe.org.
First Year Specialists - Culture, Business and [Community] Service
First year specialists who are not in the CCF select from a wide range of cultural, community service and business-related courses. Courses on offer range from Special Relativity to Post-War Theatre, and from teaching in local junior schools to Garden Design.
Courses/activities indicated thus (*) last through both OQ and LQ and pupils who choose them thus do only this activity for both Quarters.
All other courses/activities last for only one Quarter with pupils thus doing two different courses/activities: one in OQ and another in LQ.
