Rowing at Charterhouse has become a major player among the minor sports since the foundation of the Boat Club in OQ 2007.
Our pupils learn the basics of sculling at Guildford Rowing Club under the guidance of an experienced coach and Captain of Guildford Rowing Club, Mr Paul Woowat. New members are usually taken in CQ and OQ each year. Fourths will only be admitted in CQ. More experienced oarsmen who are ready to race move to train at Walton Rowing Club where we have the benefit of an excellent long stretch of water, our own boats and two coaches including former British world champion, Commander David Hosking, MBE. On top of three water-based outings for the experienced rowers (two for beginners), former Scottish rugby national Mr Ralph deJong-Mellon holds two dry training sessions per week at the School which everybody is required to attend. One of the highlights of the year is the training camp at the end of the Christmas or Easter holidays where we begin our training for the new term in Portugal or Cambridge, respectively.
Although rowing can be considered a niche sport it requires an enourmous amount of focus and dedication and the boys (and sometimes also girls) devote six training sessions per week to hone their technique and fitness.
The Club has a busy racing calendar and its strength lies in the coxed fours category for the senior rowers and quadruple sculls for juniors. Our major races are the Schools’ Head of the River Race on the Tideway in LQ and the Ball Cup South in CQ. In OQ and CQ we also race in small boats, such as single sculls, double sculls and pairs. We have an excellent track record since the foundation of the Club: 5th in the Schools’ Head, gold and silver medals in the Ball Cup and other assorted victories in heads races and regattas throughout the year.
