Debating Diplomacy

On Saturday 9 November, eight of our talented pupils took centre stage at RGS Guildford's annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference, representing Afghanistan.

The event buzzed with energy as 240 passionate delegates from 24 schools engaged in fiery debates and captivating discussions, showcasing diplomacy and teamwork at its finest.

Ariyaana (Year 11) reports:

On Saturday, pupils from our MUN society participated in RGSMUN, where we were allocated the delegate of Afghanistan across various committees. As a School, we discussed topics ranging from the Korean War to cryptocurrency and access to education. Representing a country with a volatile political environment required extensive prior research and a deep understanding of the issues at hand.

In the Security Council, our main focus was on the Kashmir conflict and the situation in Myanmar. MUN’s strategic nature was highlighted as I worked to approach these topics with both authenticity and an open mind. Arms trade, referendums, and peace talks dominated our discussions, and while resolutions were often brief, they required hours of intense debate to pass.

The General Assembly was equally engaging, offering delegates the opportunity to collaborate on addressing the challenge posed by China’s potential decline as a global superpower. Overall, the experience was enriching, with first-time participants gaining insights into the global political landscape.
