OCAS Update

2019 has been another successful year for the Old Carthusian Art Society, with this year featuring both the Biennial Exhibition (more about the Exhibition in the upcoming edition of The Greyhound) and the OCAS Feast, besides the usual variety of practical workshops and visits to artworks of interest. This year also saw the second iteration of the OCAS Prize, which this year comprised two prizes: The OCAS Fine Art Prize for an Art Specialist going on to study Art; and the new OCAS Interdisciplinary Prize for outstanding work by a student who will be pursuing a career outside the Arts. Congratulations to Clara Popescu (F19) for winning the Pure Art Prize and Raluca Baicu (F19) for winning the Interdisciplinary Prize, and our best wishes for their future careers.

We look forward to seeing our regular members and also perhaps some new members in 2020. Membership subs for OCAS for 2020 are due in February 2020 and are £20 for OCs if paid by standing order (£25 if not) and free for OCs under 25. Attendance by OCs at events is dependent on being a member of OCAS, but with up to six events taking place in 2020, this represents excellent value.

In November 2019 an exhibition of work by Peter Monkman, current Director of Art at Charterhouse, entitled Head Girl Head Boy, ran at the Lighthouse, Woking. OCAS are fortunate to have acquired a limited number of books from this exhibition and these signed copies are now available to members of OCAS on a first come first served basis – please put in your claim to Peter Burgess at ocas@hotmail.co.uk to make sure that you don’t miss out.

If you would like to join OCAS, and for all enquiries and event bookings, please contact Peter Burgess at ocas@hotmail.co.uk

The 2020 programme:

Friday 24 January 2020 6.15 pm - A guided visit to celebrated OC photographer Tim Walker's retrospective at the V&A. £15 members / £18 guests. NB we must book a block of tickets in advance for this so please let me have your booking no later than 16 December.

Wednesday 26 February 2020 7- 9 pm - Networking event at Studio.  This new event aims to put the working artists of OCAS including recent OCs in touch with the people and issues in the industry today.

Spring 2020 - Gallery Tour. By popular demand, the minibus tour of London galleries returns. The perfect alternative to slogging around all those hard-to-reach galleries with no guarantee of satisfaction. Instead, ride in comfort and good company, as we take in a curated selection of some of the spaces that are making waves this year. Refreshments at civilised intervals and last stop in a curry house for those in the know.

Summer 2020  - visit to Farleys House And Gallery, "The Home Of The Surrealists".

Friday 18 September - OCAS Feast. Once again to be held on the spectacular roof terrace of the South Bank Tower.

Late Autumn 2020 - Guided visit to Folkestone Triennial.

Lastly, we are very sad to announce that Peter Darvall (V44), our oldest member and a great supporter of OCAS, passed away peacefully on 5 November. Early in the New Year, there will be a memorial service to which all who knew him are very welcome. For further details please email foundation@charterhouse.org.uk
