Mr Ian Richards

My aim in House is very simple, I try to create a civilised homely atmosphere where all the pupils can thrive and realise their full potential in everything they do.

Respect for each other is vital to this aim and I am pleased to say that everyone from the newest Fourth (Year 9) to the House Monitors is equally important to us, and their achievements are a source of pride to all members of the House, whether it be success in academic or extra curricular activities.

I am pleased to say that we have built up a House which is full of talented students all of whom have a broad range of interests. We have some fine sportsmen, we have some excellent musicians and can produce a House Orchestra of over 20 players, as well as excellent actors and artists.

We are a cosmopolitan House with pupils from many countries. Our pupils are actively involved in the many weekend activities on offer, and I am pleased that the House is busy seven days a week.

We have a strong Old Hodgsonite Association (OHA) and I am delighted that they take an active interest in the House. We jointly organise a Careers evening when Old Hodgsonites come back and talk to our Sixth Form pupils about their chosen careers. Mr IS Richards, MA

Ian Richards has been Head of Hodgsonites since 2015.

Following a History degree from London University, Ian completed an MA at Warwick University in History and Politics. After a gap year working for the NHS, he undertook a PGCE teaching qualification at Wadham College, Oxford. Ian is currently studying towards an MEd in Educational Leadership. He taught in two state schools before coming to Charterhouse, the last of which was Dr Challoner’s High School, a girls' grammar school in Buckinghamshire. At Dr Challoner’s he was Head of Politics and Head of University Admissions.

Since joining Charterhouse in 2009 Ian has been keen to involve himself in many areas of school life, from football coaching and swimming through to organising part of the outdoors education programme.  In his spare time, Ian enjoys cross country running and has competed in a number of 10K races.

Ian teaches Government and Politics and has a particular interest in political philosophy and ideology. He has written many articles for Politics Review magazine having previously served on its editorial board. Ian has three children, all of whom love the boarding House life and like nothing better than spending time with the pupils.
