Charterhouse International School, Malaysia

Charterhouse and Charterhouse Asia are delighted to announce  the opening of the first Charterhouse International School, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Charterhouse Asia Ltd is based in Hong Kong under the leadership of Old Carthusian Sabrina Chao and its well-resourced teams are making significant progress in a number of different territories, including Malaysia and mainland China. The team has spent a significant period of time developing the direction of Charterhouse in Asia: its values, mission and vision, and most importantly, the future of education. A great balance has been struck between heritage and twenty-first century, east and west, tradition and technology.

Charterhouse Malaysia, an international sixth form collge, opened in August 2021. It is conveniently located in the heart of Sri Haramas, close to the centre of Kuala Lumpur, surrounded by premium residential areas.

Charterhouse Malaysia WebsitePupils aged 16 to 19, from all nationalities and cultures study the Cambridge A Level curriculum, over two years, with a view to accessing the top universities globally. The College offers an education programme that draws from many of the traditions of Charterhouse in the UK and its academic credentials as well as Charterhouse Asia’s mission to develop global communities where pupils and teachers studycreate and inspire.

This ethos has been encapsulated in the striking new layout of the college architecture which blends modern teaching spaces, extensive study and research facilities and a university feel to the common areas. Gone are the days of students simply sitting in rows in classrooms. Pupils are also able to take learning outside of classrooms and into communal areas set up with technology to promote collaboration or independent study.

Founding Headteacher, Mr Richard Davidson, commented:

“Charterhouse Malaysia offers the globally recognised Cambridge A-Levels curriculum, taught in small, focussed classes. But academic excellence is just one aspect of our multilateral programme, which prioritises independent learning projects to enhance service learning in the community, a Design Thinking approach to problem solving, cocurricular activities and a blended and hybrid learning model that allows students to switch seamlessly between face-to-face and online learning. We cannot wait to get started in September.”

UK Head, Dr Alex Peterken said:

“We are determined that Charterhouse should be a truly outward looking school, in every respect.  Part of this is about ensuring that our curriculum offers a contemporary view of the rapidly changing world in which our pupils are growing up, and about recognising our responsibilities to our wider communities - locally, nationally and globally.  Part of this ambition involves the creation of a family of Charterhouse schools, beyond our stunning campus here in Godalming. Charterhouse Malaysia is a fantastic first Charterhouse International school and we are thoroughly looking forward to a growing a strong relationship between the two organisations and our partnership flourish."
