Vernon Morgan (V23)

 


Vernon Morgan (V23) won the Public School Sports Mile race in 1922 and 1923. At School he set the school record in the 1923 three-quarter mile steeplechase and was Captain of the 1st XI Football team. He then went on to study at Christ Church College, Oxford, where he continued to run winning the 1925 Oxford University Athletics Club three mile race. He also won blues for football (1923) and cross-country (1924-25). 

He was the Northern mile champion in 1925 and 1930 and in 1928 represented Great Britain in the 3,000 metre men's steeplechase at the summer Olympics held in Amsterdam. In 1929 he topped the annual British rankings for the mile (4:16.4) whilst on tour with the Achilles Club in South Africa. 

In 1930 he went on to represent Great Britain in the British Empire Games where he won a Bronze medal. 

In 1931 he joined Reuters News Agency and became Sports Editor the following year. He was Honorary Press Officer of the British Olympic Association and of the British Empire and Commonwealth Games Federation. He was Chairman of the British Athletic Writers' Association and a founder member of the Sports Writers' Association. During World War II he was a war correspondent on the Finland-Russia front and Editor of war reports, London. 

He was awarded the OBE and the Olympic Diploma of Merit - the first Carthusian and only the fourth Briton ever to win this honour.
