Major Sports

For each of the three Quarters (school terms), there is a major sport. For boys they are football (Oration Quarter), hockey (Long Quarter) and cricket (Cricket Quarter). In the Oration and Long Quarters, Under School boys (Years 9 - 11) are expected to play the major sport of the term, unless alternatives are agreed with the masters of each respective year group. For girls, the major sports played in the winter are hockey, lacrosse, football and netball, and tennis and athletics in the summer. As Specialists (Years 12 and 13), both boys and girls have access to the school gym in the Queen’s Sport Centre and can attend classes such as spinning and yoga.

Cricket

During Cricket Quarter the School can put out up to 14 teams every Saturday. The boys have access to indoor and outdoor net facilities, with bowling machines, as well as seven pitches during the season. The 1st XI play on Green, a symbolic and beautiful Cricket ground with the backdrop of the School behind. The Peter May Pavilion is an iconic building and adds to the traditional aspect of Charterhouse cricket. All players will be coached by top level coaching on offer from current players and ex-internationals.

Football

Football is as traditional as the buildings at Charterhouse. As one of the biggest football schools in the country, Charterhouse prides itself on the way football is coached, played and enjoyed. The School boasts 22 football teams on any given Saturday. There are a total of 14 pitches and astro pitches on site. Charterhouse 1st XI compete in the ISFA Knockout Cup alongside the U15A team who also take their annual trip to the Gothia Youth Cup in Sweden. The season starts with a trip to the ISFA Sixes followed by high profile fixtures throughout the year against sides such as Eton, Repton, Shrewsbury and the Old Carthusians.

Girls' Football

The girls benefit from having coaching from top coaches including outside professionals. They play 7-a-side and 11-a-side with fixtures against Westminster, Bedales and St Catherine's.

Hockey

Hockey is the major sport for boys in Long Quarter and the School boasts three Astro pitches. Squads regularly train three times per week and play fixtures on Tuesday and/or Saturday afternoons. As many as 19 teams can be put out regularly in a block fixture. There is also a senior A XI during Oration Quarter who train on Tuesdays and Thursdays and have regular fixtures. The Fourth Form boys are on a rotation programme whereby they sample hockey as a sport during the first half of Oration Quarter

Girls' Hockey

The girls' hockey operate a senior squad who train on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during Oration Quarter. They have regular matches during the term against a competitive circuit which includes Reeds, Lancing College and Christ’s Hospital. They benefit from excellent coaching and play on our superb three Astro pitches. Hockey is the major game for girls in Oration Quarter. Squads regularly train three times per week and play fixtures on Thursday and/or Saturday afternoons.

Lacrosse

In the Specialist year groups the girls have the option to play lacrosse. There is a 1st X team squad that have regular fixtures on a local circuit. A fast-paced, highly competitive, and increasingly popular sport in Oration Quarter and Long Quarter lacrosse is a fully integrated part of the sporting programme.

Netball 

In the Specialist year groups the girls also have the option to play netball during the Long Quarter. There are four squads that have regular fixtures on the local school circuit and is a fully integrated part of the sporting programme. Head coach overseeing the netball programme is Emily White.
