International Partnerships

Charterhouse proudly subscribes to the concept of ‘global citizenship’; indeed, Citizenship is part of the formal curriculum throughout the school, taught both in and outside the timetable. We are privileged to be in partnership with two outstanding educational organisations abroad:

Phayar Taung Youth Development Centre, Burma

Situated in rural Shan State, Burma, the Phayar Taung Youth Development Centre is a remarkable community school, attached to the Phayar Taung Monastery on the shores of Lake Inle. Charterhouse is a proud partner of this unique school. The first Charterhouse teachers visited in January 2018, with a larger delegation returning in August 2018 to lead the inaugural ‘Teaching Development Programme’. This was a remarkable and moving week; more information about the programme and the 35 trainee teachers engaged can be found here.

Charterhouse pupils also fundraise for the school and, it is hoped, will visit in coming years.

Mellon Educate, South Africa

Mellon Educate is a genuinely life-changing charity, which provides school buildings and resources for the poorest communities in South Africa. Charterhouse’s relationship with this amazing organisation in 2017, when our Monitors raised £20,000 to support Mellon’s work in the South African townships. In August 2018, the first Charterhouse ‘Student Blitz’ took place, with 15 pupils and 3 teachers visiting Cape Town. The focus of the week was teaching literacy and science in three township schools, serving the Khayelitsha community, and it was a powerful, moving experience for all involved. As well as leading lessons, Carthusians studied alongside their South African peers, and made an emotional study visit to Robben Island with 25 Mellon Educate interns.
