Aeronautics Enthuisast

Halfway through STEM & Sustainability Week we meet Aeronautics Enthusiast Adam (Year 11).

Tell us about yourself

I am currently in my third year at Charterhouse as a Fifth Form (Year 11) pupil. I am taking Triple Science for my IGCSEs, with the hope of continuing Chemistry and/or Physics for A-Levels. Ever since I was young, I have been interested in becoming a pilot. Naturally, this led me to the world of physics, with a particular focus on aeronautics. Soon after, my interests grew to include chemistry.

What makes Science at Charterhouse special?

At Charterhouse, there are many opportunities to explore your interests in Science. Throughout the academic year, several fun and engaging lectures take place to help you deepen your knowledge in areas of specific interest. Also, as part of the School's recent initiative, Floreat, many popular societies have been established with a focus on STEM.

Describe a single moment related to Science at Charterhouse which had a really positive impact on you.

As someone who believed learning was meant to be done at desks in strict conditions, Science lessons at Charterhouse came as a pleasant surprise to me. One moment I vividly remember was attempting my first titration experiment with my partner early on in my Remove year (Year 10). I distinctly remember struggling to recall the practical initially on paper but soon finding myself confident in reciting it step by step, with the help of my teacher and my partner’s problem-solving to reach a conclusion. This experience showed me that learning can be enjoyable and engaging, as well as informative.

What advice would you give to a pupil at Charterhouse who loves studying Science?

I believe that coming to a school like Charterhouse is all about taking advantage of the opportunities around you and not taking them for granted. There are numerous ways to pursue interests, such as work clinics, societies, lectures and support from tutors and monitors. I recommend taking advantage of these resources to discover new passions and develop existing ones.

What advice would you give to a pupil at Charterhouse who finds Science challenging?

If a pupil at Charterhouse is finding Science challenging, I would advise them to utilise the various support systems available within the School. Firstly, I recommend reaching out to their pupil monitor. These pupils have recently navigated the academic challenges of Charterhouse and can offer valuable insights and study tips from a peer's perspective. Secondly, the pupil's tutor is a key resource for academic guidance. Tutors can provide personalised support, explain difficult concepts and direct the pupil to appropriate resources.
