IB Exhibition Preview

IB Exhibition Preview

On Monday 24 March, the Art department hosted a preview of this year’s International Baccalaureate Visual Arts Exhibition with work from three talented Year 13 pupils - Dora, Giacomo and India. The preview offered an exciting first-look at the exceptional work produced by our pupils as part of their examined portfolios.

Mr Matthew Caiger, Teacher of Art shares his reflections on the pupils' work:

Dora's exhibition has stimulated new ideas about curation which centre around her experience as an international pupil studying abroad and the effect of technology on social interaction. Combining these highly conceptual narratives with practical work has given Dora determination in perusing Art into higher education.

India investigated the role of protest and performance through specific and highly personal work, her profound understanding of the relationship one has with their body generates a timely socio-cultural commentary. The power, or lack of, bodily autonomy is central to India’s narrative and her performance succinctly comments on gendered experience growing up.

Giacomo explored the intensity of emotion, he has worked to illustrate a new understanding of how we, the viewer, could feel in high stakes situations. His work grabs our attention and draws you in with a compelling manipulation of oil-based media in combination with instillation-style sculpture pieces.

I so enjoyed visiting the IB Diploma Programme pupils’ exhibition this week. It was a real privilege, not just to see the incredible work that Dora, Giacomo and India have produced, but also to hear them speak so articulately and reflectively about the journey they have been on in developing as artists.

Mrs Catherine McDonald, IB Coordinator

The IB Diploma Programme visual arts course encourages pupils to push their creative and cultural limits. It helps them build analytical skills, solve problems, think differently, and gain technical proficiency and confidence in making art.
