The Beauty of Silks

The Beauty of Silks

On Thursday 25 March, Perception Society welcomes Dr Shah to speak about The Beauty of Silks

Dr Darshil Shah will speak about the cutting-edge field of Natural Materials Innovation at Cambridge, and in particular, The Beauty of Silks. This talk will look at what we can learn about sustainable materials and product design from spiders and silkworms and the incredibly complex yet functionally elegant structures that they produce. The talk will introduce new future materials inspired by silks, such as green methods of fibre production to help solve the plastic pollution problem.

Dr Shah is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Materials, and a Senior Researcher at the Centre for Natural Material Innovation, at the University of Cambridge. Shah works with scientists across disciplines developing biomaterials, such as engineered wood, bamboo, and natural fibre composites as lightweight, sustainable, and structural alternatives to conventional materials for various application sectors, including wind energy, construction, transport, healthcare, and consumer products. A major aim of his research is to combine sustainability with performance and functionality.
