A group of nine enthusiastic sixth form pupils recently visited Busbridge Junior School to launch an exciting new Science outreach initiative: Science Busking.
This creative programme is all about introducing scientific concepts to primary school children in a fun, informal way, using rudimentary and everyday equipment. This much more closely resembles street performance busking than your typical science lesson!
During the session, Year 5 pupils at Busbridge Junior School had the chance to explore a variety of fascinating scientific ideas. These included how sound travels in waves using whoopie cushions and slinkies, how chemical reactions happen using Alka-Seltzer tablets in sealed cannisters and how optical illusions trick the brain, to name just a few. The pupils even managed to make their own musical instrument using a cardboard tube, straw and plastic glove. Using the equipment to make vibrations, the group then formed the very first “glove-a-phone” orchestra.
This initiative aims to make science engaging and accessible, inspiring the next generation of budding scientists. We're thrilled to continue this programme and look forward to bringing the joy of Science Busking to even more children in the future.
