Science can be tough, but support is always at hand.
We know that some scientific concepts can be tricky to grasp, while others just need a little extra practice to master. That’s why our Science Department runs weekly support clinics in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, giving pupils the chance to consolidate their learning outside lesson time.
With specialist subject teachers on hand and the support of our Academic Peer Mentors — Year 13 pupils selected for both their scientific expertise and ability to explain complex ideas — these clinics provide a fantastic opportunity for collaborative learning.
Not only do pupils gain fresh perspectives on challenging topics, but our Peer Mentors also strengthen their own knowledge and scientific communication skills. It’s a win-win!
As word spreads, these sessions are growing in popularity — proving that in School, learning goes beyond the classroom.
Biology
Having attended all of the clinics in Biology, I have found that sacrificing time in the afternoon has benefitted me greatly. In these clinics, being able to have a one on one teaching session and plugging any gaps in my knowledge was invaluable. Furthermore, in these sessions, I can reflect on previous exam results and highlight not only how to improve but also the exam techniques to use to maximise the amount of marks in the minimum amount of time. Some of these skills vary to identifying style of questions to layouts of answers.
Krishiv (Year 13)
The Biology clinics so far have been incredibly helpful, especially those solely focused on specific styles of questions and how to answer them with step-by-step guides to achieve the highest marks.
Ruby (Year 11)
Chemistry
The Chemistry drop-in support sessions have been incredibly helpful, providing a great opportunity to ask questions and reinforce my understanding of topics. The guidance from teachers and peer mentors has helped me build confidence in areas I struggle with. Flashcards are provided in these sessions which I find especially helpful for quick revision, making it easier to recall important information and prepare for exams more effectively.
Tilly (Year 11)
The Chemistry clinics have really helped me stay on top of my Chemistry revision and start my day in a productive way. I also find these sessions end up becoming nicely collaborative as we end up working together to solve the more puzzling questions.
Lyra (Year 13)
I've found the Chemistry drop-in sessions incredibly helpful. They provide a great opportunity to reinforce my understanding through short, targeted questions that test my grasp of the theory. It's great having the teachers there to clarify concepts, strengthen my understanding and support my revision.
Reeyan (Year 13)
Physics
Physics clinics have been such a great help; it’s made me feel more confident in my ability when studying Physics. The teachers and peer mentors are always really supportive and help you to understand the topics really well.
Tallulah (Year 11)
Physics drop-in sessions have been extremely useful whether to ask specific questions you might have or to just go and do some independent work. There are peer mentors and teachers are always on hand to help you. I really enjoy it and going there weekly has been very helpful.
