Simon Singh Maths Lecture

Simon Singh Maths Lecture

Eleven pupils brave Storm Ciara to discuss mathematics in The Simpsons!

On Wednesday, 11 intrepid specialist Mathematicians ventured through the aftermath of Storm Ciara to attend an excellent lecture by Dr Simon Singh at Cranleigh School.

The talk began with an account of Pierre de Fermat and his famous last theorem - the subject of Singh’s award winning book and documentary - before veering onto mathematics in The Simpsons.

He also showed how statistical hypothesis testing can be used in complementary medicine and establishing that secret messages hidden in the so-called Bible code are in fact fake news.

The event took pupils to aspects of the subject beyond their A Level and IB studies and engaged them in a practical division problem when it came to sharing out pizza on the way home.
