The Art of Science Busking

On Wednesday 25 September, David from Science Made Simple visited Charterhouse to train a group of Sixth Form volunteers in the art of Science Busking.

This innovative initiative is designed to equip our pupils with the skills needed to communicate scientific concepts in informal settings, using everyday, rudimentary equipment.

During the hands-on session, pupils explored a range of fascinating demonstrations. They learned how to create the illusion of levitation with the clever use of balloons and force, and showcased the science of sound waves using fun props like a whoopie cushion and a makeshift 'glovaphone.' The pupils also used atmospheric pressure by making a ping pong ball float, and used optical illusions to transform a white rabbit's size.

Beyond the scientific demonstrations, the workshop emphasised the importance of effective body language and simple yet powerful techniques for keeping an audience’s attention. This experience not only fostered a deeper understanding of science but also helped the pupils develop valuable communication skills they can apply in a variety of settings.
