The Importance of Work Experience

The Importance of Work Experience

The School's FutureU Programme prepares pupils for life beyond School by offering career insights, and employability skills. With 400,000 graduates entering the job market from UK universities annually, competition for top positions is intense.

Leading employers recruit fewer than 32,000 graduates annually, and while 84% achieve a 1st or 2:1 degree, academic qualifications alone are no longer sufficient to stand out. Graduates with work experience are three times more likely to secure prestigious positions.

Employers value all types of work experience, whether paid or voluntary, as it showcases key employability skills. From working in a charity shop to assisting a family business, every role counts. Even brief placements lasting a few days can enhance your CV and improve future job prospects.

Finding work experience is easier than it seems. You can start by reaching out to family, friends, or using Charterhouse Connect.  Which offers access to nearly 3,000 contacts. Additionally, platforms like LinkedIn, networking events, and online programmes – many of which are free such as Springpod and Forage – can provide great opportunities to build experience and even earn certificates.

To Carthusian parents, if you have new work experience opportunities to share, please post them on Charterhouse Connect.

To stay up-to-date on the latest opportunities and events, be sure to follow the FutureU LinkedIn page.
