Westminster Politics Conference

Westminster Politics Conference

On Monday 10 March, all of the Year 12 Politics pupils had the opportunity to visit Westminster for the PolEcon conference. The event covered several topics, giving the chance for pupils to listen to MPs from various major political parties and engage with them by asking questions.

The event featured a wide range of prominent politicians, including Jacob Rees-Mogg and Alastair Campbell, as well other notable speakers such as Lord Brady and Lord Dubs, who shared their experiences and insights.

I think that it is crucial for us teenagers to definitively understand and challenge the views of the major political parties. We are the future and thus must be given the option to not only decide but also choose how we shape our countries' futures. This convention was without a doubt an eye-opener for the politically keen, and I hope incites others to take action both locally and internationally.

Kingston (Year 12)

The trip helped us discover many different political opinions, as well as encouraged us to be more active in politics.

Poppy (Year 12)

Each speaker addressed different topics, offering unique perspectives. Discussions ranged from party policies on NetZero to the importance of humanitarian assistance. The MPs and Lords also shared their personal journeys into politics and expressed their views on controversial topics, such as abortion.

Being able to attend the PolEcon conference was a fantastic opportunity to connect with students from around the country and hear multiple political perspectives and opinions differing from my own. I especially enjoyed listening to speakers from various parties and political groups.

Max (Year 12)

PolEcon was the first time I had the privilege of seeing big-name politicians like Alistair Campbell and Sian Berry where they are at their best; arguing their political philosophies in front of a big crowd or defending their beliefs against a barrage of questions from the audience. Listening to the contrasting, yet always persuasive, positions of the speakers encouraged me to think critically and weigh up my own views against the consensus.

Vladimir (Year 12)

Prominent figures such as Jacob Rees-Mogg, Richard Tice and Alistair Campbell all delivered a range of insightful talks before welcoming questions from the thousands of students in attendance. This made the event a unique occasion for young people to gain a deeper understanding of key political issues present in the UK from those at the centre of them.

Tom (Year 12)

The King was also scheduled to visit Parliament that day, resulting in protests being held outside the building.
