Artifex 2022

Artifex is our annual arts festival but, at Charterhouse, it’s different. It is all organised, curated and created by our talented pupils.

This year is the biggest in Artifex history, with more events than in any previous festival, numbering more than 80. Every aspect of creativity from art, music, film and drama and even to creativity in food is on offer.

We have some pupil-directed theatrical highlights in the form of a musical theatre showcase WANT, WANT, WANT (21 June), our Year 10 drama An Inspector Calls In Blue Stockings (Wednesday 22 June) and an ambitious production of Edward II in the setting of Founder’s Chapel (Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 June).

Artifex 2022 is awash with music. A special, not-to-be-missed event will be Jazz in the Dome with our leaving jazz pianist, Taki headlining a band of professionals who will serenade us on a beautiful summer’s evening in our Artifex Dome. There is also a daily selection of short recitals you can come along to in the delightful setting of South African Cloisters (Coffee Concert (Tuesday to Saturday), Concert in the Cloisters (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday).

Not only this, but we have talks, spoken word and quizzes aplenty: Inter-House Debating, Would I lie to you?, House Quiz, The Tempest (Year 9) and Versifex (spoken word in numerous languages). Some of our favourite Artifex events return again, including the Inter-House Pushkart Race, Inter-House Graffiti, C’house Got Talent, Fashion Competition, and our Open Mic with our Unity and Pride Societies.

Our pupil-run Artifex Café and Ice Cream shack will be open throughout, as well as a range of exhibitions curated by pupils: The Overlooked, The Cardboard Gallery and our A-Level art exhibition showcasing the best work of our specialist artists.

Artifex 2022 ends with our Prom in the Park on the Saturday night (25 June). As we all gather outside the Artifex dome, bring a picnic, and listen to an enticing selection of music from our concerts through Artifex week, as well as some musical theatre treats, all performed by our finest school musicians. This will be a great way to mark the end of the cultural year, on what will (hopefully) be a blissful midsummer’s evening.

Our full programme can be found on the Artifex website:, where you can find out all the details about each event. Please note that some events are marked as for pupils and staff only.

We look forward to welcoming you for the first time in two years to Artifex: one of the highlights of our School year.
