Carthusian Chamber Recital

Carthusian Chamber Recital

150th Concert Series

The fifth concert in this year's Ralph Vaughan Williams series involved a variety of ensemble performances, with an emphasis on English folk music. We warmly welcomed back Old Carthusian, Tony Zhang (H, 16-21), to perform on his clarinet once more in a setting he knows so well.

Year 12 pupil, Justin, and Mr Daniel Hill opened the concert, sharing movements of Vaughan Williams' Suite of Six Short Pieces for piano. The brass quintet played Mr Linham's arrangements of two Vaughan Williams' compositions based on English folk songs: The Spring Time of the Year and the pompous Just as the Tide was Flowing. A purpose-formed choral sextet formed of both pupils and staff performed Three Elizabethan Partsongs, also by Vaughan Williams. The concert was rounded off by Tony, who captivated us with his performance of Gerald Finzi's Five Bagatelles for clarinet.
