We are delighted that after three wonderful years influencing our young performers in his role as Actor-in-Residence, West End star Dean Chisnall has become our Director of Performing Arts.
Dean has worked non-stop in the professional musical theatre industry for the past 19 years, both in the West End and on tour, taking on principal roles in hit shows such as Blood Brothers, Mamma Mia! and Shrek, in which he played the title role, to name but a few. Dean played the leading role of Jean Valjean in Cameron Mackintosh’s Les Misérables from 2018 to 2023, initially for fifteen months in the West End and latterly on tour.
It was purely by chance that in 2020 when Dean joined us as Actor-in-Residence, that year's Charterhouse musical was Les Misérables (Schools’ Edition)! Having the then current Jean Valjean on board to help with this ambitious project was a truly inspiring experience for us all.
We are delighted that Dean is now our Director of Performing Arts. With his wealth of experience (which other school can boast a West End star as their Director of Performing Arts!) and his ability to bring out the best in people, we are certain that under his leadership Charterhouse Performing Arts will become a beacon of excellence. If the recent production of Legally Blonde is anything to go by, then we can expect West End standard productions every year.

Dean Chisnall directing the production of ' Les Misérables (Schools’ Edition)' here at Charterhouse
It is an honour and a privilege to take on this new role at Charterhouse and continue nurturing the exemplary pupils at this magnificent school. I truly believe that every pupil should have exposure to the performing arts in some form – the life skills you gain from it are incredibly precious and stand you in good stead for any career.
Dean Chisnall, Director of Performing Arts
We wish Dean all the very best as we look forward to a very bright future for performing arts at the School.
